DOURO EXTENSION

Formerly known as the Port Wine Museum, this site now extends its programme to study the Douro river and region.

The Douro river, that often overflows its banks, also lent its name to the region. After its long trajectory [spanning around 900 km], it is here – between Barca d’Alva, on the Portuguese-Spanish border, and Barqueiros, as it almost ends its course in Porto –  that the Douro is the name of a meeting place between water, stones, plants, animals and people, and the key via which this encounter occurs.

The Douro is simultaneously a region and a river, whose complexity cannot be covered by a single gaze. For this reason, this space, with the exhibition Douro: earth and atmosphere, will have a seasonal rhythm, in harmony with the cycles of the vineyard – reactivated with new exhibitions that will open in the months of March and September.

Its mission, as an embassy or outpost of the Douro region in Porto, will be fine-tuned with a programme developed with the architect Pedro Jervell, as a privileged meeting point, on the basis of the contributions of various types of knowledge, for the invention of an enlightened and poetic gaze of an arid and generous region, where man and nature have reinvented each other over the centuries.

At station 11 we taste a wine with the river on the horizon, but we also discover the Wine Cabinet, a place for talks. Here we deconstruct the idea that Porto is more than a customs house, but also a place where wine matures and rests. An invitation that is also a starting point to discover this delimited wine region.

The Douro Extension has a sound project by Pedro André.
